Abberton Rural Training - Delivering Skills to the Rural Community

We are working hard on our new Short Course timetable with new courses being prepared as soon as our new location is confirmed.

We will advise further on the courses available and timetable as soon as possible.  Please bear with us!  If you are particularly interested in a course please let us know and we will prioritise your application as soon as courses are released.

One day courses:

21st May (1 day course) - Basic Plastering

Introduction to basic plastering techniques, tools used, background surface situation and preparation prior to plastering, along with care and maintenance of tools. Mixes of various plasters and finishes will also be covered.   Includes all materials.

14th May (1 day course)

And 2nd July (1 day course)  - Intro to Green Woodwork

Introduction to Green Woodwork techniques, tools used, and preparation prior to plastering, along with care and maintenance of tools. Different types of items to be made - including wooden spoons, bowls and other useful items!  Includes all materials.

14th May (1 day course) - Painting Landscapes

Suitable for beginners or improvers, this course provides a real insight into the tricks and styles of landscapes to really help improve your watercolour paintings.  Includes all materials.

Tutored by: John Harrison  £35 per day 10:00 - 12:00


18th June (1 day course) - Make a traditional gate

Using native wood such as chestnut, ash, and oak to make a garden gate. Learn to choose, shave and prepare the wood, using green woodworking skills.  Includes all materials.

Longer courses:

4th June - 9th July (5 weeks) - Event Photography/Photography for Business

This great 5 week course introduces different types of photography for events and to look at professional techniques to improve either as an amateur or as a professional.  Looking at different skills including wedding photography, landscapes, wildlife, portraits and general photography skills including lighting it gives a real eye opener to improve your photography.  Bring your own camera, otherwise all is provided including settings and models!

Tutored by: John Puczkowski  £35.00 per week. 10:00 - 13:00


5th June – 10th July (6 weeks) - Introduction to Basic Carpentry

This 6 week course will cover use and proper care of tools, introduction to basic joints, fixings and finishes. Uses of different timbers (hard, soft and man-made). Design and construct your own small project. Includes all materials.

11th June – 9th July (4 weeks, no class on 16/07) - Spinning

Learn to spin in 4 weeks - learn about the quality of fleeces and carding. Learn how to wash, card and spin natural wools. Each person works on their Individual spinning wheel, giving plenty of hands on practice. Includes all materials.

Ongoing course - Creative Textile Techniques

Learning basic sewing skills on the sewing machine and more advanced techniques, such as machine embroidery and quilting, to create contemporary textile designs.   All materials provided.

Ongoing course - Fruit & Veg for Beginners

An introduction for new allotment holders and home growers, covering what you need and how to do it. Focusing on setting up systems within your allotment or garden, seasonal planning, management and composting.
